The Clerkenwell Mysteries

Our exciting new community project!

Big Wheel have been commissioned by the Holy Redeemer Church and London Metropolitan Archive to lead a revival of the Clerkenwell Mystery Plays. These were religious plays that took place in the local area back in the middle ages.

This community event aims to teach young people a bit of history relating to their local area as well as incorporating elements of drama, PHSE and religious studies.  The main event took place at the Exmouth Market Centre on the 14th May 2010 and was free for all to attend.

After several rehearsals with pupils from local primary schools including Hugh Myddelton & St John Evangelist, the children came together to perform sketches about The Easter Story (performed in the style of the Jerry Springer Show) and an X-Factor recreation of The Apostolic Mission.  The grand finale was a short play about the Apocalypse featuring an epic slow motion battle between aliens and humans!

Before the show the pupils paraded up Exmouth Market and through Spa Fields Park led by a pantomime donkey, carrying banners and home made shields displaying their own personally designed coat of arms.

Our work on this project will be continuing this autumn with local secondary school pupils. We will keep you posted!
